Best Practice Videos

To help you support students during each episode in a workplace simulation, Classroom, Inc. recommends a Prepare, Apply, Review, and Extend instructional model. At each of these phases, you play a central role, whether you are providing whole-class direct instruction or facilitating the work of teams on the computer. These videos demonstrate a range of teaching strategies we hope you’ll find useful.

 WEST END LAW

PREPARE   Shelly Noel, an 8th-grade teacher at JHS 292 in Brooklyn, taught a summer- school session in which she worked with middle school students using the West End Law simulation. Watch her first prepare her students for their experience on the computer.

APPLY   Now that Ms. Noel’s student teams have a good grounding for the cases they’ll encounter in the episode, their interaction on the computer reflects their preparedness. Their free exchange of ideas builds knowledge, informs their opinions, and leads to a thoughtful collaborative decision.

REVIEW  In their review of the episode, we encourage teachers to help students reflect on their collaboration—an important 21st Century Skill.

THE KALLIOPE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

PREPARE  In this video, Lori Velez, Classroom, Inc. Implementation Manager, works with a group of Classroom, Inc. Institute students. Here she prepares students to act as curator for The Kalliope Performing Arts Center’s gallery.

APPLY  Students are now ready to work on the computer.

REVIEW  Here, Ms. Velez pulls it all together. These Classroom, Inc. Institute students are fully engaged in her review and in their own discussion.
