For summer school to be successful, students must see the work they are doing as a relevant alternative to their school-year work.
Classrooms are transformed as students engage in a virtual career
internship using career simulation software and related nonfiction
books, projects and activities.
Working in groups of three, students assume a leadership role in a vital career and
engage in hands-on learning focused on improving literacy and math skills.
Students recognize the link between the classroom and the real world as they:
- read reports, write memos, and participate in meetings to make “real-life”
decisions in their virtual office.
- use their math skills to prepare budgets and analyze data.
- work collaboratively to make decisions that will affect their colleagues,
industry, and community.
Students stay in their roles to practice and extend their skills by doing workbook
activities, reading nonfiction books related to the theme, and completing
interdisciplinary projects.
