New York Life Foundation

Classroom, Inc. is delighted to announce that we have received a generous first-time grant from the New York Life Foundation in support of our work with high school students. The grant will enable us to focus on an exciting, comprehensive Transition to High School Program that integrates summer bridge and 9th-grade school year programs for at-risk rising 8th graders and current 9th graders.

Studies show that 9th grade is often a critical turning point for low-achieving students. Fewer than 50% of students entering 9th grade in New York City meet grade-level proficiency in English and math; in many cases they are two or more years below grade level. A typical trajectory for many of these students is disengagement with school, followed by poor attendance, course failure, and ultimately dropping out.

Classroom, Inc. has a successful track record in working with this student population in separate summer bridge and 9th grade Academy programs. By combining a summer bridge with a 9th grade school-year program, we will not only help these at-risk students prepare for the academic rigors of high school, but we’ll also provide the continuity of support that 9th graders need to build on their academic skills and stay on the path to graduation.

We are pleased to be partnering with the New York Life Foundation in developing this new program. For over 30 years, the Foundation has been a leader in providing support to organizations and programs that benefit disadvantaged children, particularly in the areas of educational enhancement opportunities, safe places to learn and grow, and childhood bereavement.
