Understanding Complex Texts

The Common Core State Standards place great emphasis on students mastering complex texts. But how can teachers help students achieve this mastery? Education Update features an article, “It’s Complicated,” that deals with just that question.
The article reveals a different approach to unlocking layers of meaning in a text, one that questions the effectiveness of some widely used methods, such as tight scaffolding and text-to-self questioning techniques.
